Maternity Nurse

What is a maternity nurse and what do they do?

A maternity Nurse is a specialist in providing postnatal care for mothers and babies. This helps support the parents into their new role, or reminds them about care of their baby if this is an addition to the family.

Maternity Nurses stay in your home for either 12 or 24 hours at a time. Sarah is happy to provide either length of stay with 12 hour day or night bookings. Stays can be up to 6 days per week. Sole charge of the baby can be undertaken. Care can be provided on a short term or continuous basis. i.e. for a period of several weeks or for as little as an occasional night or for a weekend away.

As well as being a qualified Nurse and Midwife, Sarah has a Maternity Nurse qualification, a first aid certificate and a DBS certificate. She has undertaken many additional courses and is fully insured.

  • A maternity Nurse is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the nursery area
  • Performing the baby's laundry needs
  • Supporting the mother's rest and promoting her health needs after a normal or caesarean birth
  • Support with breast or formula feeding including making feeds and sterilising equipment and taking responsibility for night feeds of expressed milk of formula. If night feeds are to be provided by breast feeding then minimal waking time of the mother is supported by Sarah changing and settling baby pre and post feed.
  • Bathing, changing and settling the baby. Morning top and tail performed
  • Daily walk of the baby in the fresh air
  • Advice on routine
  • Advice on baby massage and tummy time, first play and learning
  • Help to integrate the new baby into the existing family
  • Enabling couples to spend time together either within the home, with friends or going out for a meal, to the theatre, cinema or simply a walk in the park.
  • Sole charge of the baby can be undertaken either  as a long term basis or so you can attend a wedding or other family function or have time away as a couple to recuperate.
  • Sarah is happy to accompany you to events, such as weddings, to care for your baby whilst you enjoy yourself.
  • If you have more than one home Sarah is happy to travel with you between venues and even abroad.
